The Story of Medusa

This design was inspired by the story of Medusa and the famous statue Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini in Florence.

We think of Medusa as a monster and Perseus as the hero sent to slay the Gorgon.  The myth actually has Medusa as a young, beautiful girl assaulted by Poseidon in Athena's temple.

In a fit of rage Athena punished Medusa not Poseidon, transforming her into a feared and hideous monster with serpent hair and the ability to turn men into stone with her gaze.

The picture attempts to represent victims blaming culture and female empowerment.
